We have received reports that customers of Aston Midshires Insurance have not had motor insurance arranged as expected. Find out why you should ensure you are covered.

Update

On 27 January 2011, the Swedish financial regulator, Finansinspektionen, withdrew the authorisation of European Wood Insurance AB. As a result, the firm’s ‘passport’ into the UK has been cancelled and it is no longer EEA authorised. Aston Midshires may have claimed that the underwriter of its insurance policies was European Wood Insurance AB.

A firm authorised in another European Economic Area (EEA) state can offer certain products or services in other EEA countries, such as the UK, if it has a ‘passport’ to do so. This means that European Wood Insurance AB is no longer on our Register and is not authorised by us. Aston Midshires Insurance has never been authorised or regulated by the FSA.

You can find out more about EEA firms and how they appear on our Register.

We are continuing to work with the City of London Police to investigate this matter, and will provide further information as it becomes available.

What Aston Midshires customers can do

Customers of Aston Midshires Insurance should check that the broker arranged motor insurance as expected, as we have received reports that it sold policies to customers but failed to properly register their details and premiums.

As a result, if you were a customer of Aston Midshires Insurance you may not be covered as a driver on UK roads and may need to arrange other insurance.

There are penalties for not having a valid motor insurance policy and you may not be covered if you need to make a claim.

How to check you are insured

Directgov has more information on how you can ensure your motor vehicle is insured.

You can also check the Motor Insurance Database now for free using askMID.

If you need to arrange a new policy or temporary cover you can check our Register to find an authorised insurance provider.
