Economic analysis and research are a fundamental element of our commitment to evidence based policy. Most microeconomics research at the FSA is conducted by the team of economists in the Economics of Financial Regulation Department (EFRD), which is part of the Strategy and Risk Division.

We use Market Failure Analysis and Cost Benefit Analysis to help evaluate where we intervene and the means through which we intervene. We also conduct and/or commission economic research to help inform the current and future agenda for financial regulation. We are committed to encouraging debate among academics, practitioners and policy-makers in all aspects of financial regulation.

To help do this, we use a number of different mechanisms:

  • we publish a series of peer reviewed occasional papers in financial regulation, extending across economics and other disciplines.
  • we host a seminar series attended by FSA policymakers, industry practitioners and academic researchers.
  • we have limited resources available to fund research projects, both internal and external, that are closely linked to the development of FSA policies or E.U. directives; and
  • we maintain strong relationships with universities including Cass Business School, Imperial College London and Oxford Saïd Business School. In addition, we have a PhD Scholarship Scheme with the London School of Economics.

These pages designed to provide an overview of some of the areas in which we are undertaking or planning to undertake research.
