The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) came into effect on 1 November 2007, and replaced the existing Investment Services Directive (ISD).
MiFID has been in force for four years and is the cornerstone of the EU’s regulation of financial markets. On 20 October 2011, the European Commission (EC) adopted a legislative proposal for the revision of MiFID. The proposals take the form of a revised Directive and a new Regulation which together are commonly referred to as ‘MiFID II’.
For information on these new proposals, which are currently going through the legislative negotiation process, and are unlikely to take effect until at least 2015, see our Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II) webpage.
The other content and links on this page relate to the current MiFID framework and rules, which remain in force at the present time.
