The FSA hosts international regulators seminar
29/11/1999
Howard Davies, the Chairman of the FSA, and Melanie Johnson, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, today, opened an international regulators seminar, hosted by the FSA. The weeklong seminar, which is being attended by almost 100 regulators from 60 countries, addresses the challenge regulators from around the world face in todays global banking, securities and insurance markets.
In his introduction to the seminar Howard Davies said:
"The increasing interdependence of the financial markets, across sectors and borders, means that this seminar should prove useful to all regulators, in all jurisdictions. The aim of the seminar is for colleagues from around the world to consider together the problems of regulating complex financial markets in todays world, and how these can best be addressed in differing circumstances. The fact that this seminar is so well attended pays testimony to its pertinence and relevance.
"The FSA has excellent working relationships with regulators around the world reflecting the international nature of the UKs financial markets and this seminar is an opportunity for us to build on those relationships."
The seminar includes sessions of general interest, discussion in smaller groups of sector-specific issues and visits to firms and markets in the City.
Notes for editors
The Governments intention, as set out in the Financial Services and Markets Bill currently at the Committee stage in Parliament is that the FSA should be the single statutory regulator of financial services business.
In previous years H M Treasury has held a "Regulatory Familiarisation Programme" for overseas regulators.
The seminar, based at the FSAs premises in Canary Wharf, is free to participants. Participants will pay their own travel and accommodation expenses.
