Mutual Societies
These pages provide information on the FSA's registration functions for mutual societies. Mutual societies include industrial and provident societies such as co-operative societies or societies for the benefit of the community, credit unions, friendly societies, working men's clubs and building societies.
From 1 December 2001 the FSA took over the functions of the Central Office of the former Registry of Friendly Societies and those of the Assistant Registrar for Scotland.
These functions include:
- registering new industrial and provident societies; registering and recording documents on behalf of industrial and provident societies;
- registering and recording documents on behalf of friendly societies and certain other types of mutual societies registered under the Friendly Societies Act 1974;
- registering and recording documents on behalf of building societies;
- registering and recording documents on behalf of credit unions.
