The FSA aims to be an open and transparent regulator. We recognise there is demand from the industry for statistical information on the numbers of firms operating in sectors of the market. So we have decided to publish statistics relating to selected key areas in the retail sector.

We have provided details on the number of firms in each of the three main sub-sectors (financial advisers, general insurance intermediaries and mortgage and other home finance intermediaries), together with their legal status, the number of firms holding client money and the number of appointed representative firms.

How are these statistics produced?

We have produced these statistics by extracting information from our core regulatory database. We will update the statistics on this site shortly after the end of each calendar quarter.

How to use these statistics

We have categorised these figures using primary and non-primary activities undertaken by firms. A firm can only have one primary activity but it can have multiple non-primary activities. It would be incorrect to add non-primary category figures together for different sub-sectors, since this would result in double-counting.

Can we do more?

We are working towards publishing further statistical information on this sector. However, we need to ensure the information is reliable, clearly explained and there is a demand for it from the market. If you have a particular need for sector-wide statistics that are not yet available, please tell us what you would like to see on this part of the website. This will help us to prioritise our work.
