An introduction from the sector leader

Welcome to the retail intermediaries and mortgage sector section of the website.

Our sector team is one of several that have been set up to focus on particular areas of the industry, and specifically covers:

  • Financial advice firms
  • The retail mortgage market (intermediaries and lending activities)
  • Retail general insurance intermediaries

The team contributes across the FSA's statutory objectives and has a particular role in supporting the key priority of making retail markets function more effectively and, as a consequence, helping consumers achieve a fair deal.

By working closely with our internal and external stakeholders we try, as early as possible, to identify and assess the major risks arising in this sector. Our aim is to ensure that the FSA is fully aware of issues as they are emerging, so that we can engage with the industry to identify solutions before problems arise. We also act as a focal point that can be used by firms and trade bodies in the sector to communicate their major concerns to the FSA.

Within the organisation, we liaise on a regular basis with the supervisory areas that deal directly with firms in the sector, or (like our policy area) deal with matters that impact on them. This means we can monitor current issues relevant to our sector, spot emerging issues, provide input into changes in regulation and policy affecting the sector, and ensure that different areas of the FSA are working together for the benefit of the industry and consumers alike.

If you have any issues that you believe would be of interest to the sector team, or if you think we may be able to help you, then I would encourage you to contact us.

Sector placement scheme

The sector team runs a scheme to help FSA staff increase their knowledge and experience of the industry by going on a short (2-5 day) placement to an intermediary firm. If your firm would be interested in showing us 'life on the other side of the fence' please see our leaflet for more information or contact us.
