IAIS

The International Association of Insurance Supervisors was established in 1994 to promote co-operation among insurance supervisors and regulators in other financial sectors. It currently has members in over 160 jurisdictions and holds a General Meeting during its Annual Conference where all members and some 70 organisations are invited. The IAIS develops principles, standards and guidance on insurance supervision and is active in promoting their implementation. The main objectives of IAIS are to:

  • contribute to improved supervision of the insurance industry on a domestic as well as an international level;
  • promote the development of well-regulated insurance markets; and
  • contribute to global financial stability.

CEIOPS

The Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pension Supervisors was established in 2003 and is composed of high level representatives from the insurance and occupational pension supervisory authorities from member states of the European Union. The authorities of the member states of the European Economic Area also participate in the CEIOPS. The three main roles of CEIOPS are to:

  • improve coordination and convergence between insurance and occupational pensions regulators by providing a forum for supervisory cooperation and the exchange of information on supervised institutions;
  • advise the EU Commission, particularly with the preparation of draft implementing measures for insurance, reinsurance and occupational pensions directives; and
  • ensure a more consistent and timely implementation of EU legislation in the member states.
